Chapter 16
âHow are things moving along with her?â Christine asks.
Nick is sitting on the couch watching TV while Christine reads a book from the sofa. Sheâs not looking at him when she asks that question, so itâs difficult to gauge what sheâs thinking.
âNo new developments,â he says.
âHm,â she gives a curt response.
âWhat?â
âEither youâre not as charming as you used to be, or the girlâs a tough nut to crack.â
He canât tell if Christine is deliberately trying to take a jab at his masculinity again, so he ignores the remark.
âIâm a married man, Christine. Emma knows that,â he says.
âYou think sheâs just trying to be respectful of your marriage?â
âYes. That, and she probably doesnât want to be on bad terms with the neighbors across the street. Have you ever thought about that?â
âOh, please. All those girls are little sluts. They would jump in bed with the first man that hits on them. They donât care about the sanctity of marriage, or that theyâd be ruining a family.â
âEmmaâs not like that. Sheâs kind. Selfless.â
âOr maybe she just doesnât like you.â Christine flips to the next page. She still hasnât looked up from her book.
âOh, she likes me. I guarantee it. She just hasnât made any moves because, again, marriage.â
Finally, Christine puts her book down in her lap and looks at Nick. In turn, he stops focusing on the TV.
âYou really think thatâs the only thing stopping her from hooking up with you?â Christine asks.
âYeah. Well, that, and her low self-esteem. Itâs down under the ground. And I mean, really deep down.â
âMother?â
âAlways is.â
The weight of the actions of the mother is always heavier than that of the father. A mother carries her child in her womb for nine months, lets it leech her nutrients like a parasite. When itâs out, the mother nurtures it, feeds it using her breast milk, and a powerful connection is created.
Even children who never knew a motherâs touch crave it. They look for a compensation. Something that will replace that feeling of emptiness that follows them their entire life, making them bitter and angry.
And then when they grow up, they hate their mother. They hate her with such a fiery passion that they would like her to suffer the most gruesome, painful death.
And still, the emptiness would remain. Nothing would be able to replace it. Not even a partner similar to the mother.
âI think the problem is you were too friendly to her,â Nick says as he changes the channel.
âExcuse me?â Christine asks.
âYou heard me. You were too polite to her, and now you need to add that into the equation.â He starts counting by expanding one finger at a time. âOne, Iâm married. Two, she doesnât have enough confidence to make the first move. And three, we were both so polite to her that she would rather suppress her emotions than wreck our marriage.â
âOh, if only she knew the kinky shit weâre into.â Christine smiles. âYou know, if youâre too incompetent to get the girl in bed, I can make it easy for you.
